Figure of Intimacy

This project's main aim was to create a full body, tactile experience between lifeless form and living being. I wanted my sculptures to occupy the liminal space between comfort and discomfort - The phallic, uncanny, organic forms juxtaposed the plush materials and maternal techniques to simultaneously instigate both a desire to interact with the foreign body and an unwillingness to do so.
Presented here is a photoshoot capturing genderless form. I wrapped a peer in cloth to photograph the abstracted shapes, curves, crevasses and contortions created. This provided me with a basic understanding of how I could disfigure and strip back human anatomy to create a balanced outcome that still maintained a sense of being without overtly mimicking the human body.
Here you can see my first experiments with scrim and stuffing to create bulging sculptures. The final products began to embody rolls of fat, cellulite or packaged meat that were successfully unsettling though intriguing nonetheless.
Pictured above are a further two experiments; The first sculpture explores a simpler design but a larger scale whilst the second sculpture incorporated a second material and required a more vigorous process of machine sewing.

These are two dimensional black ink prints taken from the material used to create the previous sculptures.
Here you are able to see my process of expansion. I used a new material, a warmer toned, more durable mesh and again, expanded my scale to create further possibility for a full body interaction. I began to refine the shape, using ruffles and loose mesh to contrast and exaggerate the swelling wrinkles.
Presented above is the final iteration of sculpture before the final exam. I have once more increased the scale of the mass and again, intend to do so once more for the final work.
Here are the sculptures photographed in their intended context. You can gage how large they are and their possibilities for interaction. I allowed both personal and shared experiences, providing little instruction, merely observing.
Shown here are the final results of my two day exam period. I have used one final material that was more durable, softer to the touch and presented a more grotesque, fleshy tone. The third sculpture in particular was expansive and almost overwhelming, stuffed with enough material to allow interaction though also remain a firm body itself.
