Do I Know You?

‘Do I Know You?’ Is a multi-screen, interactive installation consisting of transcribed interviews, found images, scans of personal belongings, written analysis, extensive photography and a myriad of collated digital media that together map out history and personality. This installation delves into the preservation and formulation of identity within a cyberspace, taking the form of a quasi-scientific study of my roommate which parodies a ‘Big Brother’ aesthetic, concurrently exploring ideas surrounding pervasive surveillance and interrogating personal identity. This installation asks the viewer to question their own understanding of the differences between monitored, fallacious self-expression and honest, unfiltered perception as well as how they draw the line between assumed privacy and public domain. Are we really who we say we are or, whether consciously or unconsciously, do we alter our identity; Fabricating or reconstructing ourselves to present a more pleasant truth, a palatable facade? Through a lens of technological delineation, this project also aims to explore the possibility of truly 'understanding' someone having never met them. Does society believe in complex individual identity or are we all merely an amalgamation of learned behaviour, reflections of our environment and psychologically explainable habits?
Presented below are the individual elements either displayed on the screens or printed on the sheets.
